Democracy is in jeopardy without a private vote

Once again, reading the daily papers, I find the anti SB2 people writing about the “uninformed voter,” that “treacherous Default Budget,” and the “small number of people who could possibly change the meaning of or eliminate a warrant article.” Like there was never an uninformed voter at the auction-like town meeting… like default budgets were unheard of from town meetings… and (here is the real laugh-out-loud funny one) like there never was a small group of people with special interests or mercenary motivation who took control of town meeting... duh! For those of you who are on the fence about SB2, these arguments are all emotional efforts to scare the public into staying with the centuries old, out dated, powerfully manipulated and limiting way to vote the use of your tax dollar. SB2 is not about slashing budgets, eliminating services and killing school systems. It is about the freedom of the vote.....

Whether you work as a teacher, a police officer, a fire/rescue person or if you are working at a job that takes you out of town or out of state, if you are retired and spending some deserved time in the warmer climes or just plain house bound… you all have the right to vote freely and privately. Voting is a freedom that is guaranteed to all of us in every other aspect of politics except on the very local venue, that of our own town… our own tax dollars. We all have heard the argument that with SB2 the “uninformed voter could vote his/her wallet”… oh… my… goodness… really? I would hope they would. There are issues that need this conservative approach. The people that promote the horror of “life in Moultonboro as we know it would end” theory are those with the most to lose. Their power. From the school board, to the selectmen and the moderator, they all have a harder job to convince the voting public of their special interests they want to push through, if there are more of us voters to convince. Last year’s Recreation Center is the perfect example. The voter turnout was the heaviest in years and they were over turned. When more are allowed to vote the town stays within its means. Being fiscally conservative is not “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” as my aunt used to say. It is however, listening to the voting public. They tout that town meetings are the “purest form of democracy.” Hooey! Pure democracy is the right to vote, privately and freely. Democracy is being denied each and every time a voter is not able to get to a town meeting and spend the day there. Democracy should never be compromised. Why is this country registering illegal aliens hand over fist to vote in every election from city council to the White House, but you and I cannot vote on critical local issues unless we are able to be present to raise our hands at town meeting? Please consider your freedom to vote on March 10 when deciding the SB2 issue.
